Welcome to Sound City Reading
The Sound City Reading materials are designed to help children learn the phonics patterns they need to become successful, independent readers. I hope that you will find them useful. The downloads are free. You'll need Adobe Reader to download them. It will take a few minutes to download each file. After the file downloads, it takes about another half minute to open. The materials are in the form of PDF files that can be printed as practice books, workbooks, flashcards, and games. You may print the materials from this site or save any of the files to your computer after you open them. Just click on the square disk to save the file. To make it easier to look through the pages of each file, click on the button showing a page with four arrows pointing up, down, left, and right. This will give you a full view of each page. Click the arrows at the top of the page to move from one page to another.
My materials are copyrighted, but I give permission to parents, teachers, and tutors to download and print them for their students. Permission for schoolwide use is permitted. Any other use by anyone except myself is prohibited.
While I was a first grade teacher I used the Scott Foresman Reading Street program. I created some materials which introduce phonics patterns in the same sequence taught in this reading series. There are Phonogram Pattern Worksheets, Decoding Sheets, Stories, Word Wall Materials, and Tests. All of these materials can be reached by clicking the Reading Street For First Grade link on the menu bar on the top left side of this page. I'm sometimes asked If I have created supplementary Reading Street materials for other grades. I have not, and I don't know of any sites with similar materials at other grade levels. However, the Sound City Reading phonics materials, which are separate from the Reading Street materials, cover a span from kindergarten through second grade. Please check them out. Older students who need extra practice with word recognition and spelling will also benefit from the Sound City Reading materials.
Click on any topic on the menu bar on the upper left to see the related materials.
Note February 2014: I've added the newest versions for each level. Please refresh the pages on this web site (by clicking the circular arrow at the top of the page) as you view them, in order to see any updates that have been made. Be sure to update the welcome page, otherwise it will not reload correctly when you return to it from another page. If any page appears garbled, it will load the new page version when you refresh the page.
My name is Kathy Davis. I started working as a teaching assistant in a resource room in 1985, and worked as a teacher from 1989 until 1999 and from 2002 until 2011. Along the way I tutored a number of children individually as well. I've given the name of Sound City Reading to the phonics materials I've developed to help children learn to read and write. I've used this name because I added roofs to the first letter charts I put on the classroom wall to make them look like a row of houses in a city.
Note March 2014: I've added listening pages so you can hear the sound story and sound charts directly from the screen. See the menu on the left for the link. Unfortunately, this does not appear to work for Macintosh computers at this time. I've added a link on the pages to click if you can't hear the sound; hopefully this will work.
Important Note: December 2016
It has been two years and nine months since I've updated this site. I now have a new site at www.soundcityreading.net. You can find the newest revised materials, uploaded in 2016, on the new site. The site has a different appearance and format. I hope you will be able to navigate it successfully. There is still much to be done before the new site is completed. I'll be adding a new set of wall charts and a series of instructional videos as I complete them. It will be an ongoing process.
I've copied the Reading Street PDF files from this site to the new site. During the next few months, I'll be thinking about what else might need to be moved. At this time I'm not planning to transfer all of the older versions of the Sound City Reading books and workbooks unless I have specific requests for particular versions. If all goes well, at the end of June, 2016, I'm planning to close this site and continue with just the new site. It's possible this date will be delayed, depending on how much time it takes to make sure everything needed is tranferred over. First I want to be sure the new site works fine for all of the current teachers who are using Sound City Reading materials. I want to be sure that everyone can find what they need and that everything downloads properly. I know a lot of teachers are still using this older site and I don't want you to be inconvenienced or lose access to any of the files you need. Please e-mail me at email@example.com if there are specific pdf files or groups of files that you want me to transfer to the new site.
There are two reasons for the change to a new web site. First, this site was built on a much older computer using older software. I'm currently typing on the old computer, but I can't keep it forever. Unfortunately my new computer will not work with the older program and will not connect to this web site. Second, it is much easier to add audio and video files to the new web site. I'm planning to add a number of videos to the site and perhaps some audio files as well.
Please see my new site at www.soundcityreading.net.
